US Nuclear Power Pipeline Signals Potential Clean Energy Renaissance

The United States may be on the verge of its biggest expansion of nuclear power in decades. Although many proposed projects are still in the planning stages, a growing development pipeline—driven by rising electricity demand, artificial intelligence data centers, and energy security concerns—suggests that nuclear energy is once again becoming a central part of the nation’s long-term energy strategy.


According to a recent analysis by the Breakthrough Institute, developers have announced 74 gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear generating capacity across the United States. If every project were ultimately built, the nation’s nuclear fleet would grow from its current capacity of roughly 97 GW to more than 170 GW, representing one of the largest expansions in US nuclear history.


“While it is unlikely that all of that capacity will ultimately be built, if even a fraction of it is deployed it would mark a historic turnaround for the US nuclear industry,” wrote Breakthrough Institute analyst Joy Jiang, author of the report.


The United States already operates the world’s largest fleet of commercial nuclear reactors. According to the US Energy Information Administration, nuclear power supplies 17.8% of US electricity while providing almost half of the country’s carbon-free electricity generation.


Unlike previous decades, much of the demand for new reactors is not coming primarily from traditional electric utilities. The Breakthrough Institute found that companies building massive AI and cloud-computing data centers account for about 30 GW, or more than 40%, of the proposed capacity. These facilities require enormous amounts of reliable, around-the-clock electricity that intermittent renewable sources alone may struggle to provide.


New Generation of Reactors

Many of the proposed reactors are expected to be small modular reactors or other advanced designs that promise lower construction costs, enhanced safety features, and greater flexibility than conventional large reactors. However, financing, licensing, supply-chain constraints, and construction timelines remain significant hurdles before many projects can move forward.


States are also taking steps to encourage new nuclear investment. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation establishing a competitive procurement process for advanced nuclear power projects. The new law directs state regulators to begin seeking proposals for at least 1,100 megawatts of new nuclear generation while incorporating protections intended to shield ratepayers from construction cost overruns.


Whether the United States ultimately builds only a handful of these proposed reactors or several dozen, the current pipeline represents the strongest resurgence of interest in nuclear power in a generation—and could reshape the country’s energy landscape for decades to come.
